President William Ruto joined legal experts, politicians, and fellow citizens in mourning the loss of renowned human rights and constitutional lawyer, Pheroze Nowrojee.

In a statement issued late Saturday, President Ruto described Nowrojee as a distinguished constitutional lawyer and a steadfast advocate for human rights.

He expressed his sorrow, stating, “It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, a long-serving advocate, highly respected constitutional lawyer, and tireless defender of human rights.”

The President emphasized Nowrojee’s unwavering commitment to advancing democracy, protecting fundamental rights, and promoting the rule of law.

“Mr. Nowrojee was widely admired for his principled approach to these causes and his remarkable grace, intellect, and solidarity with ordinary citizens,” Ruto added.

President Ruto noted that Nowrojee’s death is a loss for all Kenyans, highlighting the late lawyer’s significant contributions to the country’s democratic development and human rights culture.

He concluded his message by offering condolences to the Nowrojee family on behalf of all Kenyans.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga also joined in paying tribute, describing Nowrojee as a symbol of forthrightness and resilience in the fight for human rights in Kenya.

“For as long as Kenyans have fought for their civil liberties, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has stood steadfast, unwavering as the People’s Attorney,” Odinga said.

“His impact is seen in every milestone our country has achieved, including the 2010 Constitution. His passing marks the end of an era and leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.”

Chief Justice Martha Koome praised Nowrojee as a mentor and an icon in the Kenyan legal community, describing him as a guiding conscience for many.

Other notable figures, including People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., also paid their respects, honoring Nowrojee’s pivotal role in defending human rights both in Kenya and beyond.

Across the board, the tributes echoed Nowrojee’s legacy as a stalwart defender of justice and a trailblazer in the field of human rights advocacy.
