The Ugandan government has officially responded to the disappearance of opposition leader Kizza Besigye in Nairobi, denying any knowledge of his abduction.
In an interview with Daily Monitor, Uganda’s Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, stated that he was unaware of Besigye’s abduction and emphasized that the government was investigating the matter.
“I am currently in Soroti as part of President Museveni’s entourage.
I’m not aware that he is being held by the government. I’m still cross-checking with our security agencies.
In any case, why would he be arrested?” Baryomunsi remarked.
However, sources close to Besigye’s allies have revealed that the opposition leader will face charges at a military court martial in Kampala on Wednesday at 11 am.
This development has sparked growing concern, especially among political figures and activists in both Uganda and Kenya.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi) condemned the abduction, calling it a violation of extradition laws.
Wine pointed out that Besigye’s disappearance follows a troubling pattern, citing the abduction of 36 activists from Nairobi to Uganda earlier this year.
He expressed alarm over the increasing number of Ugandan citizens being abducted in Kenya.
In response, Baryomunsi rejected any wrongdoing, insisting that the government follows proper extradition procedures.
“The government is not in the habit of arresting citizens and keeping them incommunicado forever.
If Besigye is arrested, he will be arraigned in court,” he said.
Baryomunsi added that the authorities were still in contact with Kenyan security agencies, as Besigye had been in Nairobi for a book launch before his disappearance.
Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, confirmed that her husband went missing while attending the launch of Martha Karua’s memoir on November 16.
She has called on the Ugandan government to release him, citing reliable information that he is being detained in a military jail in Kampala.
Karua herself has also demanded Besigye’s release, urging Ugandan President Museveni and Kenyan President Ruto to clarify the opposition leader’s safety and whereabouts.
Besigye had been expected to attend Karua’s book launch before his sudden disappearance.
