25 People Killed in 16 Road Accidents on December 23 Alone, NTSA Reports

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists to ‘exercise extreme caution, use the road responsibly, and strictly adhere to traffic rules’ as enforcement initiatives intensify.

The authority sent out the plea while reporting the number of people who lost their lives through road accidents on December 23, alone.

In a press statement issued by NTSA on Wednesday, December 24, the authority confirmed that at least 25 people died in traffic accidents reported across several counties on December 23.

In the statement, NTSA Communication Office disclosed that Kenya recorded 16 fatal accidents in various parts of the country such as Nairobi, Nyeri, Kakamega, Siaya, Machakos, Narok, Kiambu, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu and Kisii counties.

Most of those who were affected are passengers and pedestrians, accounting for eight deaths each.

The aforementioned groups were followed closely by motorcyclists, who accounted for five fatalities, one driver and three passengers.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” NTSA announced.

The authority reaffirmed that road safety remains a top priority, noting that intensified enforcement operations are underway nationwide during the festive season.

According to NTSA, drunk driving, absence or malfunctioning of speed governors, operating unroadworthy vehicles, carrying excess passengers, lack of proper insurance and operating without a valid Road Service License(RSL) are some of the most common offenses committed by most drivers and road users.

NTSA confirmed that 42 drivers have been arrested, while 418 vehicles have been declared non-compliant.
