Nairobi Traffic Commander Announces Multiple Road Closures Ahead of CHAN Tournament

Nairobi Traffic Commander Joseph Chirchir has issued a traffic advisory announcing multiple road closures in the capital ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixtures scheduled for Sunday, August 10.

In a statement released Saturday, Chirchir detailed the affected routes and urged motorists to use alternative roads to avoid congestion as thousands of fans make their way to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, the venues for Sunday’s key Group A matches.

Road Closures and Diversions

Aerodrome Road: Closed between the Madaraka roundabout and the Bunyala roundabout.

Lang’ata Road: Closed on one side from the Madaraka roundabout to the Lusaka roundabout.

Alternative routes: Motorists heading to the CBD are advised to use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from the Mbagathi roundabout.

Mombasa Road: Closed on one side from Lusaka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout.

Alternative routes: Use Likoni Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni Hotel.

Motorists travelling from CBD to Thika Road (towards Ruiru, Juja, and Thika) should use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.

Matatus ferrying fans to Kasarani Stadium must divert to Ruaraka Baba-Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road, leading to Ngomongo roundabout.

Those heading from Thika Road into the CBD should consider Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road instead.

Avoid Thika Road unless you are going to Kasarani Stadium,” Chirchir cautioned.

The traffic restrictions come as Kenya hosts the third round of Group A CHAN matches:

  • Kenya vs Morocco – 3:00 PM at Kasarani Stadium
  • Zambia vs Angola – 6:00 PM at Nyayo Stadium

Kenya’s Harambee Stars currently top Group A with four points after a 1-0 win in their opening match and a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Angola despite being reduced to ten men after Marvin Odhiambo was sent off in the 20th minute.

Morocco and DR Congo trail closely behind with three points each, while Angola sit fourth with one point. Zambia, bottom of the group, have yet to earn a point.

A win against Morocco would guarantee Kenya a place in the quarter-finals, securing a sh 60 million reward promised by President William Ruto with a game to spare.

Fans attending the matches are advised to plan ahead, use public transport where possible, and remain alert to traffic updates shared by Nairobi traffic authorities.
