Can Someone See If You Save Their TikTok?

TikTok is known for its short, engaging videos that users often want to save for later viewing or sharing. But if you download or save someone’s TikTok video, will the creator know? The answer depends on how you save it and the creator’s privacy settings.

  1. Saving a TikTok Directly to Your Device

When you tap the Share button and choose Save Video, TikTok downloads the clip to your phone’s gallery or camera roll.

  • No Notification to the Creator: TikTok does not notify the creator when someone downloads their public video.
  • Privacy Settings Matter: If the creator has disabled downloads in their settings, you will not see the “Save Video” option on their content. In that case, you can’t directly save the video to your device through TikTok’s official feature.
  1. Adding a Video to Your Favorites

Instead of downloading, you can tap the bookmark icon to add a TikTok to your Favorites within the app.

  • Private to You: When you favorite a video, it is saved in your account’s private Favorites section.
  • No Alerts for Creators: The creator will not be notified that you added their video to your Favorites.
  1. Screen Recording a TikTok

If downloads are disabled but you still want a copy, you might think about using your phone’s screen recorder.

  • No Detection by TikTok: Currently, TikTok does not alert creators if someone screen records their video.
  • Legal and Ethical Note: It’s always best to respect a creator’s rights — using their content without permission can violate copyright rules or the platform’s community guidelines.
  1. Duets, Stitches, and Sharing

TikTok offers interactive ways to engage with content, such as Duets and Stitches, which let you use portions of someone else’s video in your own creation.

  • Creators receive a notification when someone Duets or Stitches their video.
  • This is different from simply saving or downloading — it’s a public form of interaction that appears on your profile.
  1. Privacy for Creators

If you’re a creator and don’t want people downloading your videos:

  1. Go to Settings and Privacy in TikTok.
  2. Tap Privacy.
  3. Under Downloads, toggle off “Allow video downloads.”

Even with downloads off, your videos can still be favorited within TikTok, but those favorites remain private to each user.
