Witness Reveals How He Was Tricked Into Withdrawing Stolen Cash Linked To Violent Carjacking

A witness stunned a Kangundo court after testifying that he unknowingly helped withdraw money stolen during a violent carjacking believing he was assisting a friend with a family emergency.

The case involves a robbery that took place on April 29, 2024, at Kambai Junction along the Kangundo-Mwala Road in Machakos County.

The victim, retired chief physiotherapist Titus Muteti Kilika, was carjacked and robbed of various personal items, including a Samsung mobile phone, national ID, NHIF card, medical practitioner card, multiple ATM cards from Equity, Family, Sidian, and Shirika banks, and sh1.5 million in cash.

Four suspects Duncan Wambua Kimeu, Dennis Ndolo Mutunga, Wambua Kinyili Mutunga, and Charles Mutinda Margaret were later arrested and remain in custody.

On Thursday, contractor Augustine Muoki testified that he was misled by his acquaintance, Duncan Wambua, into assisting with a large cash withdrawal.

Muoki recounted receiving multiple calls from Duncan on April 30, 2024. Duncan claimed he needed help withdrawing money to pay for his uncle’s medical expenses.

“Duncan first called me at 2 p.m., but I was travelling from Mombasa. He later called again at 5 p.m., insisting he needed help. I referred him to my friend Benjamin, a businessman. Duncan called once more at 11 p.m. and asked me to accompany him since he didn’t know Benjamin well,” Muoki told the court.

They met at a petrol station in Athi River and then drove to a casino in Westlands, Nairobi, where Duncan withdrew sh300,000 and proceeded to gamble.

After suffering losses, he was refunded sh240,000, from which he only paid Muoki and Benjamin sh20,000 half of the sh40,000 initially promised.

Muoki was later arrested along Kiambu Road by DCI officers investigating the robbery. He identified Duncan as the person who had contacted him, still under the impression the money was for a medical emergency. He now appears in court as a State witness.

Other witnesses who testified included Chief Inspector Martin Kitayi, Dr. James Kilika, Corporal Morgan Wekesa, and retired Corporal Mwakideo.

Inspector Kitayi testified that all exhibits and relevant documents had been submitted for forensic analysis by Senior Sergeant Fredrick Maina of Kangundo Police Station.

Corporal Wekesa detailed the arrest of Duncan and his subsequent confession, which led to the capture of accomplice Dennis Ndolo and eventually Muoki.

The case is being heard before Principal Magistrate Sammy Opande and is scheduled for mention on October 28, 2025.
