T-Pain began his career in 1999 as a member of the rap group Nappy Headz. Later, music promoter TJ Chapman by Rocco “Did It Again!” and Mike Blumstein of Chase Entertainment, discovered him.

Afterwards, he released his debut mixtape Back @ It in 2004. His cover of the Senegalese-American singer Akon’s “Locked Up”, titled “I’m Fucked Up”, led to a deal with Konvict Muzik. 

This led to T-Pain releasing his first studio album Rappa Ternt Sanga, in December 2005. The album peaked at number 33 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The album’s singles “I’m Sprung” and “I’m ’n Luv (wit a Stripper)”, topped at number eight and five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

His commercial breakthrough came with his second album, Epiphany in 2007, which topped at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2008, T-Pain released Three Ringz. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. It also produced multiple charting singles. Later on, he formed the duo T-Wayne with the American rapper Lil Wayne.
