Murkomen orders intensified crackdown on illegal brews and drugs in Trans Nzoia

The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, Sunday urged Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in Trans Nzoia County to step up efforts to eradicate illegal brews and drug abuse, citing the county’s high prevalence of illicit alcohol and narcotics.

Murkomen noted that Trans Nzoia ranks among the counties most affected by illegal brews and drugs, stressing that the problem poses a serious threat to security, public health, and social stability.

He called for a coordinated approach involving government agencies, the church, parents, and the wider community to effectively address the challenge.

“For Kenya to be secure and peaceful, we must eradicate illegal brews and drugs. We agreed during the Jukwaa la Usalama in Trans Nzoia that the county must be removed from the list of those topping in prevalence,” Murkomen said.

The Cabinet Secretary made the remarks while attending a church service at AIC Riwo Church in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County.

He challenged local administrators to remain firm and vigilant in enforcing the law, warning that illegal alcohol and drug abuse continue to undermine livelihoods, fuel crime, and destroy families.

Murkomen also called on the church to play a more proactive role in nurturing moral values and shaping the character of young people.

He urged faith-based institutions to adopt modern and practical approaches that resonate with today’s youth and effectively address contemporary challenges.

At the same time, the CS appealed to parents to take greater responsibility in raising their children, cautioning against leaving the entire burden of discipline and values formation to schools.

“Parenting is a responsibility that cannot be delegated,” he said, emphasizing that strong family foundations are key to combating drug abuse and other social vices.

The government, Murkomen added, remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure safer communities and improved security across the country.
