Kenyans enraged as ODM diehard Gaucho lands plum government job

A fresh political storm is brewing online after outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporter Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, landed a lucrative government appointment, triggering a wave of anger and debate among Kenyans.

Reports circulating on social media indicate that Gaucho, a self-declared diehard supporter of Raila Odinga, has been appointed to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, a major public health facility in Nairobi.

The appointment, allegedly made under the Nairobi County administration, has sparked backlash from sections of the public who question the criteria used to allocate such influential positions.

Online backlash and public outrage

Kenyans took to social media platforms in droves, expressing frustration over what many described as “rewarding political loyalty over merit.”

Critics argue that Gaucho’s long-standing allegiance to ODM and his vocal support for Raila Odinga may have played a role in his elevation.

Some users openly questioned his qualifications for the role, while others accused political leaders of perpetuating patronage networks that sideline professionals in favor of loyalists.

The controversy has been amplified by Gaucho’s past public image, one that blends grassroots mobilization, controversial activism, and viral moments.

In one widely circulated video months earlier, he was seen distributing cash to fellow supporters, a move that drew mixed reactions and raised eyebrows about his methods of political engagement.

From the streets to political spotlight

Gaucho’s rise is as dramatic as it is polarizing.

Born in Migori County, he has previously spoken about his struggles in Nairobi, including doing menial jobs and navigating a difficult upbringing before finding his footing in politics.

Over time, he carved a niche as a vocal mobilizer within ODM’s grassroots structures, even attempting to vie for youth leadership positions multiple times, though unsuccessfully.

His unwavering loyalty to Raila Odinga earned him visibility within political circles, with supporters often praising his dedication while critics dismissed him as a controversial populist figure.

A deeper debate on governance

Beyond Gaucho himself, the uproar has reignited a broader national conversation about governance, transparency, and meritocracy in public appointments.

Political analysts say such reactions reflect growing public fatigue with perceived favoritism in government roles, especially at a time when unemployment remains high and many qualified professionals struggle to secure opportunities.

Others, however, argue that Gaucho represents a segment of grassroots political actors who have long been overlooked despite their role in mobilizing support and shaping political discourse.

Silence from authorities

As of now, Nairobi County officials have yet to issue a detailed public statement clarifying the appointment process or defending the decision.

Meanwhile, Gaucho himself has remained largely defiant in the face of criticism, with allies urging Kenyans to respect his journey and contributions to political organizing.
