Police intercept tractor collecting remains of chopper that killed MP Ng’eno without consent

In a bizarre and developing twist to the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of MP Ng’eno and five others, police have arrested a tractor owner after he was found attempting to collect parts of the ill-fated aircraft from the crash site without authorization from investigators.

The incident stems from the fatal crash of a private Airbus H125 helicopter, registration 5Y-DSB, which went down in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Sub-County, Nandi County, on Saturday afternoon, February 28, 2026.

The chopper was ferrying the Emurua Dikirr lawmaker and five others when it struck treetops amid poor weather and burst into flames, killing all on board.

Chaos at the Crash Scene

According to social media reports monitored by authorities, a tractor, reportedly dispatched by private individuals, was spotted at the crash site in what appeared to be an attempt to remove sections of the wreckage and salvage parts without the consent of police or aviation investigators.

The National Police Service, which has been securing the scene since shortly after the tragedy, quickly intervened.

Officers apprehended the tractor operator on suspicion of interfering with a crash investigation and mishandling evidence of a fatal air accident.

Police sources say the tractor had not been authorized to enter the cordoned-off area, which remains under tight security to preserve crucial evidence and allow forensic and aviation specialists to piece together what led to the fatal flight’s final moments.

Background: The Chopper Crash and National Mourning

The helicopter, which departed Wilson Airport in Nairobi on the morning of February 28, was traveling across several stops, including a brief landing in Emurua Dikirr, before heading to the Nandi Hills area.

Investigators say it encountered deteriorating weather conditions late in the day and made an emergency stop before attempting to take off again.

Moments later, it crashed and burst into flames, killing all six aboard, including MP Ng’eno.

News of the crash sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political circles. Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula and President William Ruto were among the leaders who publicly mourned the legislator, describing him as a devoted public servant and fearless voice for his constituents.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and the country’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) have launched a thorough probe into the causes of the crash, examining flight records, weather data, and aircraft systems to determine whether mechanical failure, pilot decisions, or environmental factors were to blame.

Why the Tractor Arrest Matters

Wreckage from aircraft accidents often contains critical clues about what happened in the moments leading up to the crash.

Unauthorized removal of any parts or debris can compromise the investigation and potentially obscure the truth about causal factors.

Security teams have been systematically combing the crash area for evidence, including the helicopter’s flight data recorder and other instruments vital for reconstructing the accident.

Police say any attempt to interfere with these efforts will be met with firm action, as evidenced by the recent arrest related to the tractor.

Continued Probe and Public Assurance

Investigators and police have called on the public to avoid speculation and allow professionals to carry out their work, pledging transparency once the analysis is complete.

Law enforcement officials reiterated that maintaining the integrity of the crash site is essential for delivering accurate findings and providing closure to the bereaved families.

As the nation continues to absorb the loss of MP Ng’eno and his companions, the unusual episode involving the tractor serves as a stark reminder of the need to respect official processes in the wake of tragedy.

Officials are expected to release more detailed findings once the AAID completes its initial examination.
