Empire actor Terrence Howard reveals how his bad temper cost him Marvel role

American actor Terrence Howard has opened up about a career setback that he now believes was largely caused by his own temper, losing a role in the hugely successful Iron Man franchise.

The star, widely known for his role in the hit TV series Empire, recently reflected on the incident during an appearance on the PBD Podcast, admitting that a heated confrontation with a Hollywood producer may have sealed his fate in the Marvel universe.

Heated Exchange that Changed Everything

Howard revealed that the trouble began in 2007 while promoting the thriller The Brave One, which starred Jodie Foster.

During the promotional tour, he confronted producer Joel Silver about why his name was not placed above the movie title alongside Foster’s in promotional materials.

According to Howard, Silver explained that Foster had the leading role while Howard appeared in a supporting role, which justified the billing arrangement.

Although the actor said he understood the explanation, the conversation reportedly escalated.

Howard admitted he reacted angrily and warned the producer that if he ever spoke to him that way again, he would “knock his teeth out.”

Looking back, Howard now acknowledges that the moment was a major mistake.

Losing a Marvel Opportunity

At the time, Howard had just appeared in the first Iron Man film as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, the military officer who later became War Machine in the Marvel storyline.

The 2008 blockbuster launched what would become the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, when the sequel was announced, Howard was no longer part of the cast.

The role of Rhodey was instead taken over by Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2.

Howard believes his earlier confrontation may have played a role in the decision.

The situation was complicated by the fact that Silver’s producing partner, Susan Downey, was also connected to the Iron Man production team.

The actor said he only realised later how damaging such behaviour could be in the tightly connected Hollywood industry.

Advice from Denzel Washington

Reflecting on the experience, Howard said veteran actor Denzel Washington once warned him that his combative nature could cost him opportunities.

Washington reportedly advised him that producers were trying to open doors for him, but his readiness to fight was pushing them away instead.

Howard now says he views the incident as a life lesson and an example of how personal behaviour can affect professional success.

A Career that Still Thrived

Despite losing the Marvel role, Howard continued to enjoy success in Hollywood.

He gained widespread acclaim earlier in his career with films such as Hustle & Flow, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Years later, he became a household name again when he starred as Lucious Lyon in Empire, a drama series that ran for six seasons and became one of television’s biggest shows.

Even so, the actor admits that losing the Marvel role remains one of the biggest “what if” moments of his career, a reminder that in Hollywood, talent alone is not always enough. Sometimes, as Howard now says, attitude can make or break an opportunity.
