FKF delegation in UK scouts Kenyan-descent players for Harambee Stars ahead of AFCON 2027

A high-level Football Kenya Federation (FKF) delegation, led by Vice President McDonald Mariga, is currently in the United Kingdom on a strategic mission to recruit players of Kenyan heritage.

Accompanied by NEC member Yusuf Abdallah and Harambee Stars team manager Nick Kimanthi, the group is engaging with UK-based footballers eligible to represent Kenya, aiming to secure their commitment to the national team.

The initiative marks an early step in preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hosted across East Africa including Kenya.

With Harambee Stars under  coach Benni McCarthy seeking to strengthen the squad, the focus is on tapping into the diaspora talent pool players born or raised abroad with Kenyan roots who could bolster the team’s midfield, defense, and attack.

Kenya has long eyed dual-eligible talents in Europe, similar to successes with players like Vincent Harper, who recently chose Harambee Stars over England youth setups.

The delegation’s talks emphasize the national pride, development opportunities, and competitive pathway under McCarthy’s vision to elevate Kenya’s continental standing.

This scouting effort aligns with broader FKF strategies to integrate foreign-born stars, addressing past challenges in convincing diaspora players to switch allegiances. Positive outcomes could see new faces in upcoming friendlies and qualifiers, injecting fresh quality into the squad.

The mission underscores Kenya’s ambition to build a more competitive Harambee Stars for AFCON 2027 glory on home soil. Updates from the delegation are expected as discussions progress.
