Johnson Sakaja has sparked heated debate online after a video surfaced of him appearing to flaunt an alleged new helicopter, at a time when many residents are still grappling with the effects of flooding across the city.
The controversy erupted after the Nairobi governor took to social media to respond to popular Kenyan content creator Njambi Fever, who had earlier criticised him online over the state of the county.
Njambi had called out the governor regarding the mess in Nairobi, particularly following the massive floods that affected several neighborhoods just days ago.

In the now-viral clip, Sakaja recorded himself speaking directly to the camera while standing in front of what appeared to be a brand-new helicopter.
The aircraft could be seen parked behind him as he addressed his critics, with the governor appearing relaxed and confident in the video.
During the clip, Sakaja also bragged about his growing presence on TikTok, claiming he had already gained more followers than Njambi despite having joined the platform only recently.
His remarks were interpreted by many as dismissive of the concerns that had been raised about the city’s challenges.
However, instead of entertaining his followers, the video left many Kenyans, especially residents of Nairobi, with a bad taste in their mouths.
A section of netizens felt the governor’s response was tone-deaf, given the struggles many people in the capital are currently facing due to heavy rains and flooding.
Over the past few days, several areas in Nairobi have experienced severe flooding after prolonged downpours, leaving roads submerged, homes damaged, and businesses disrupted.
Many residents have been calling on county leadership to urgently address drainage issues and improve infrastructure to prevent recurring flood disasters.
Against this backdrop, Sakaja’s video showing off the alleged new chopper quickly ignited criticism across social media platforms.
Numerous users accused the governor of losing focus on his priorities as a leader, arguing that he should be concentrating on solving the city’s pressing problems rather than engaging in online showmanship.
Some netizens went further, alleging that the display of luxury raised questions about the use of public resources.
One user wrote:
“Nairobi is flooded and people are suffering, but our governor is busy showing off helicopters. Leadership is about priorities.”
Another commented:
“Instead of fixing drainage and garbage problems, he is competing with content creators on TikTok. Nairobi deserves better.”
A third user added:
“This is exactly why people lose trust in leaders. Stop enriching yourselves and work for the people who elected you.”
Others questioned the optics of the video, arguing that public officials should be mindful of their actions, especially during times when citizens are facing hardships.
Despite the backlash, the clip continues to circulate widely online, fueling debate about leadership accountability and the responsibilities of public officials.
The incident has also highlighted growing frustrations among Nairobi residents who have long complained about persistent flooding, poor drainage systems, and waste management challenges in the city.
As the debate rages on, many Nairobians say they hope county leadership will shift its focus back to addressing the infrastructural problems that continue to affect daily life in the capital.
