Residents of Igembe North Sub-County in Meru County earlier today woke up to news of a dramatic overnight security operation that left a feared gang leader dead following a violent confrontation with police.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, March 21, 2026, at around 2:00 a.m., when a joint team of officers from Laare Police Station, drawn from the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), were conducting a routine patrol in the Shauri Yako area within Linjoka sub-location.

According to police reports, the officers came across a group of about five young men behaving suspiciously under the cover of darkness.
When the officers challenged them, the situation quickly escalated as the suspects allegedly opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to take immediate defensive action.
A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, with officers returning fire in a bid to protect themselves and members of the public.
In the confrontation, one of the suspects was shot dead, while the remaining four managed to escape into nearby bushes.
Authorities have described the fleeing suspects as armed and dangerous.
Police later identified the deceased as Mutembei Kola, a man believed to have led a notorious criminal gang linked to a series of incidents that have terrorized residents across Igembe North.
His death is being seen as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle organized criminal networks in the region.
At the scene, officers recovered a Beretta Gardone pistol loaded with three rounds of live ammunition, along with a spent cartridge, evidence investigators say underscores the level of threat posed by the gang.
The body of the slain suspect was moved to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Security agencies have since launched an extensive manhunt for the four suspects who escaped during the shootout.
Detectives say efforts are underway to track them down and bring them to justice before they can regroup or carry out further attacks.
Police have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order, praising the officers involved in the operation for their swift response and bravery in the face of danger.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
