Afande Denno thrives as boiled maize seller months after being dismissed from police service

Once known for his uniform and dedication to duty, Afande Denno has rewritten his story in a way few would have predicted.

Months after losing his job in the police service, the former officer has embraced a completely different path, one that now sees him pushing a trolley of boiled maize and steadily building a name as a hustler on the streets of Nairobi.

Denno first captured public attention during the height of Kenya’s Gen Z protests, where he was widely recognised as a vocal and relatable police officer.

However, his growing visibility and alleged involvement in the protests ultimately cost him his job, cutting short a career that had provided him with a stable monthly income.

Rather than retreat into uncertainty, Denno chose reinvention.

From badge to biashara

After his dismissal, Denno ventured into self-employment, setting up a modest boiled maize business, popularly known as mahindi boilo.

Operating mainly in Nairobi’s Imara Daima area, he began selling maize from a simple trolley, a move that symbolised both resilience and adaptability.

The transition was not easy.

Moving from a structured government job to informal trade required not only financial adjustment but also a mental shift.

Yet Denno leaned into the change, embracing the hustle culture that defines many young Kenyans navigating tough economic realities.

What started as a survival strategy has now evolved into a growing enterprise.

Reports indicate that his maize business has been gaining traction, with Denno even making bulk deliveries worth thousands of shillings, proof that the venture is no longer just about getting by, but about growth.

Support, visibility and social media influence

Denno’s journey has been amplified by social media, where his story continues to resonate with many Kenyans.

His openness about losing his job and starting from scratch has earned him admiration, with some viewing him as a symbol of resilience in a harsh economic climate.

At one point, he revealed receiving support from well-known figures, including help in acquiring equipment for his business, an indication that his story has attracted goodwill from across different circles.

His online presence has also played a key role in marketing his hustle.

By sharing updates, customer interactions and progress milestones, Denno has turned his personal brand into a business asset.

A reflection of Kenya’s hustle economy

Denno’s transformation mirrors a broader reality in Kenya, where many young people are increasingly turning to small businesses and informal trade amid limited formal employment opportunities.

His journey underscores a growing mindset shift, where dignity is no longer tied to white-collar jobs, but to resilience and the ability to adapt.

Street food vending, especially boiled maize, remains one of the most accessible businesses due to its low startup costs and constant demand.

Denno’s success highlights how even the simplest ventures can become sustainable with consistency and smart positioning.

Looking ahead

Beyond the maize business, Denno has hinted at bigger ambitions, including leadership aspirations at the grassroots level.

While still early, such plans suggest that his journey may evolve beyond biashara into public service once again, albeit through a different route.

For now, however, Afande Denno’s story stands as a powerful narrative of reinvention: from enforcing the law to navigating the streets as an entrepreneur, proving that sometimes losing one path can open the door to another.
