Jubilee Party National Chairperson Vincent Kemosi has spoken out following his overnight detention at Nyamira Police Station, claiming he was arrested without being informed of any offence and later questioned over allegations that he was mobilising youths to participate in the June 25 demonstrations.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Kemosi, who is also the immediate former Member of Parliament for West Mugirango Constituency, recounted the events that led to his arrest on Tuesday night.
According to Kemosi, about 20 police officers, some in uniform and others in civilian attire, arrived at his home in Rangeni Okora Village at around 10 p.m. while he was having dinner with his parents.
“I had just taken dinner with my parents and we were discussing family matters when police officers knocked on my door. They informed me that I was a person of interest and asked me to accompany them to the police station,” he said.
Kemosi said he sought to know the offence he had allegedly committed but was informed that he would receive further details at the police station. He claimed officers warned him that failure to cooperate could result in him being handcuffed.
The Jubilee official said he voluntarily accompanied the officers and was escorted to Nyamira Police Station, where he was booked at approximately 10:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, he again sought clarification on the reason for his arrest but was allegedly informed that officers had instructions to detain him.
“They told me they had been instructed to arrest me and place me in the cells. I was not informed of any specific offence at that time,” he said.
Kemosi spent several hours in custody before being summoned to record a statement shortly after 1 a.m.
During the questioning, investigators reportedly asked him about his activities earlier in the day, including his attendance at a graduation ceremony for students from vocational and training institutions at Sironga Sports Ground.
Kemosi said he had addressed the gathering after being invited to greet attendees and later met some of his supporters outside the venue before proceeding to other engagements.
“I was asked about the event and my movements throughout the day. I explained where I had been and the activities I attended,” he said.
The former legislator stated that after recording his statement between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., officers informed him that he would be released on condition that he complied with any future instructions from investigators.
He was eventually released at around 3 a.m.
Kemosi maintained that he had not committed any offence and denied allegations that he was mobilising youths to participate in protests.
“I was told that I was being accused of mobilising youths to come out in large numbers and protest today. That is something I never did and I want to state that clearly for the record,” he said.
The Jubilee Party chairperson has now called on authorities to respect constitutional rights and due process, insisting that any investigations should be conducted within the confines of the law.
His detention comes amid heightened security operations in several parts of the country as authorities monitor demonstrations and commemorative activities marking the first anniversary of the June 25, 2024 anti-government protests.
