Narok Disarmament Drive Gains Momentum As Residents Surrender More Illegal Firearms

The ongoing peaceful disarmament exercise in Narok County has recorded fresh progress after residents voluntarily surrendered two AK-47 rifles, marking continued success in efforts to enhance security and curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.

The National Police Service confirmed that the weapons were handed over on Tuesday in Ng’edelel Location, as part of a coordinated operation involving security agencies, local administration officials, and community leaders working together to promote lasting peace.

According to authorities, the recovery of the two assault rifles adds to a growing number of illegal firearms surrendered since the exercise began, reflecting increased trust and cooperation between residents and security agencies.

Security officials said the initiative is aimed at reducing armed violence, preventing cattle rustling, and strengthening peaceful coexistence among communities in Narok and surrounding areas that have previously experienced sporadic insecurity linked to illicit arms.

The National Police Service reiterated that the disarmament programme remains voluntary and community-driven, emphasizing that sustained engagement with residents has been key to its success.

Officials further noted that continued dialogue with elders, local administrators, and peace committees has played a crucial role in encouraging individuals in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them without fear of prosecution, provided they cooperate with authorities.

The service said it remains committed to maintaining the momentum of the exercise, with the long-term goal of ensuring enhanced public safety and stability across the county.

Residents have been urged to continue supporting the initiative by providing information that could assist in the recovery of more illegal weapons and help prevent crime.

Security agencies encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities or information related to illegal firearms through the nearest police station or via the National Police Service hotlines, including 999, 911, or #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203, as well as WhatsApp number 0709 570 000, with an option for anonymous reporting.

Authorities expressed optimism that sustained cooperation between communities and security agencies will lead to a safer and more secure Narok County.
