15-year-old girl killed in crocodile attack while fetching water in Makueni


A 15-year-old girl was killed in a crocodile attack while fetching water from the Athi River in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County.

The incident occurred in Kamboo Sub-location.

Police said the victim, a Junior Secondary School student at Ndalani Comprehensive School, had gone alone to fetch water from the river when she was attacked by a crocodile and dragged into the water.

Police officers and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and established that members of the public had already retrieved the girl’s body from the river before their arrival.

However, officers were unable to process the scene or remove the body to the mortuary after angry residents prevented them from carrying out the procedures.

The motive for the standoff was not immediately clear.

Police said efforts were underway to engage the local community to facilitate the removal of the body for preservation and a post-mortem examination as investigations into the incident continue.

And police in Murang’a County are investigating the death of a 71-year-old man who was found dead on his farm in Maragua South Sub-County.

The incident was reported on Tuesday evening after a neighbour discovered the body of Julius Mumunyu Kamau lying on his shamba at Gikomora Village, Ichagaki Location.

According to the report, the neighbour was on his way to deliver milk to Gikomora Shopping Centre when he came across the elderly man lying motionless along a footpath that passes through the farm.

Police officers from Maragua Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), visited the scene and established that the deceased had apparently collapsed while tilling his land.

The scene was documented, and officers noted that the body had no visible external injuries.

The body was moved to Maragua Level Four Hospital Mortuary, where it will undergo a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
