A woman died after a fire broke out at a mabati rental building in the KCC area of Nairobi early Sunday morning.
The fire was reported at about 1.40am, police said.
Police rushed to the scene and established that the four-room rental building had caught fire.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire may have started from a cooking stove reportedly being used by a female occupant whose identity had not been established.
The woman was unable to escape the blaze and died at the scene.
An unknown quantity of household property was also destroyed in the fire.
Scenes of Crime officers processed and documented the scene as police began investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The body of the unidentified woman, which had visible burns, was moved to the City Mortuary pending identification and a postmortem examination.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.
Elsewhere, eight residential units occupied by police officers were destroyed by fire at the EPZ Police Post in Athi River, Machakos County, in an incident that left government property, official documents and household belongings destroyed.
The fire broke out at about 10.20pm on Saturday at the EPZ Police Line within Athi River South Sub-County.
Police officers rushed to the scene after the incident was reported.
Preliminary investigations established that the fire started in Unit 5 before spreading to seven other single-room units occupied by officers attached to the EPZ Police Post.
A fire response team from Mavoko Sub-County was deployed and managed to extinguish the blaze.
Crime Scene Investigation personnel processed and documented the scene. During the exercise, investigators recovered parts of a Beretta rifle, including its serial number, from Unit 5.
Assorted government stores, official documents and household items were completely destroyed in the fire.
No casualties were reported.
The cause of the fire had not been established, and investigations were underway to determine how the blaze started and the circumstances surrounding its spread to the other housing units
