Three-time 1,500m world champion and Kenya Police Service Chief Inspector Asbel Kiprop is at the centre of an unfolding investigation after he was allegedly drugged and robbed following a night out at a club in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County.
According to reports, Kiprop visited the entertainment spot on Friday afternoon to watch football when a woman approached him and joined him for drinks.
The two reportedly spent some time together before leaving the club for a nearby guest house.
What happened afterwards has prompted police investigations, with the celebrated former athlete reportedly found in a drugged state. An undisclosed amount of money was allegedly taken from him.
Kiprop later reported the incident to police the following day, prompting officers in Kapseret to begin searching for the woman believed to have been with him before the alleged incident. Area Police Commander Sephania Kamoren confirmed that investigations were underway.
Police praise Kiprop for speaking out
Rather than keeping the incident private, Kiprop is reported to have spoken openly about what happened, a decision that police authorities have described as important in raising awareness about the dangers associated with drink spiking.
Kamoren commended the senior officer for coming forward, noting that his experience could serve as a warning, particularly to young people who frequent entertainment venues.
The police commander said the incident should encourage members of the public to remain vigilant while socialising and to report suspicious incidents instead of remaining silent because of embarrassment.
What is a ‘mchele’ incident?
In Kenya, the term “mchele” has become widely associated with cases where a person’s drink or food is allegedly spiked with a stupefying substance, leaving the victim disoriented, unconscious or unable to remember what happened.
The issue has previously attracted national attention, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations investigating cases involving suspects accused of drugging revellers before stealing their valuables.
In one case documented by the DCI, detectives arrested a woman suspected of stupefying and stealing from a reveller.
Citizen Digital has also previously reported on “Operation Mchele”, describing drink spiking as the act of secretly putting alcohol or drugs into another person’s drink without their knowledge.
Other reported cases have involved victims losing large amounts of money after allegedly being drugged at entertainment establishments.
In a 2023 case, detectives opposed bond for three suspects accused of spiking a man’s drink and transferring more than Sh1 million from his bank account.
From world champion to police officer
Kiprop’s reported ordeal has attracted considerable attention because of his public profile.
The 37-year-old former athlete is one of Kenya’s most decorated middle-distance runners.
He won the 1,500m world title three consecutive times, in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and was awarded the 2008 Olympic 1,500m gold medal after the original winner, Rashid Ramzi, was disqualified for doping.
Following his athletics career, Kiprop joined the Kenya Police Service and rose to the rank of Chief Inspector.
His transition from elite athletics to policing has made him a recognisable figure both within sporting circles and the security sector.
A warning to revellers
The Kapseret incident has once again placed the spotlight on the risks faced by people who accept drinks from strangers or leave their beverages unattended in crowded entertainment venues.
While investigations into Kiprop’s case continue, authorities have not publicly identified or charged the woman allegedly involved.
The allegations therefore remain subject to investigation, and no conclusion about her culpability can be made until the police inquiry is completed.
For revellers, however, the case offers a familiar warning: enjoy nightlife, but remain cautious about drinks, unfamiliar company and situations where one’s awareness or ability to make decisions suddenly changes.
The police investigation will now seek to establish exactly what happened between Kiprop’s arrival at the club, his subsequent movement to the guest house and the reported theft.
