Lawrence Murimi, the Kenyan boy who captured national attention after reporting to Form One with a rooster due to lack of school fees, has successfully passed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The news was announced on January 9 by televangelist Bishop Ben Kiengei, one of Murimi’s key benefactors, who took to social media to celebrate the student’s achievement.
Expressing his pride, Kiengei praised Murimi for his determination and academic success, saying the young man had “passed with flying colours.”
Murimi first made headlines in 2022 when he arrived at Kangaru High School in Embu County accompanied by his mother, carrying only a rooster as payment for school fees.
Photos of the moment, showing the then 14-year-old dressed in his primary school uniform, quickly went viral after the pair were turned away from the school in tears.
At the time, Murimi had scored 313 marks in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, a performance that highlighted his academic potential despite his family’s financial struggles.
Following the viral story, Kenyans from all walks of life stepped in to support him.
Former Kameme FM presenter and televangelist Muthee Kiengei was among those who ensured Murimi was admitted to school, pledging through Kiengei Live Media to pay his school fees for a full year and appealing to the public for additional support.
Further assistance came from former Water Cabinet Secretary Cicily Kariuki, an alumnus of Kangaru High School, who contributed a full year’s school fees.
Education officials, including representatives from the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC), the County Director of Education, and school administrators, also visited Murimi’s home to facilitate his enrollment and provide essential personal items through donations from well-wishers.
Murimi’s KCSE success has been met with an outpouring of congratulatory messages on social media, with many praising his resilience and hard work.
County Director of Education James Kairu reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a 100 percent transition to secondary school, urging parents facing financial challenges to seek help from relevant education offices.
Murimi’s journey from hardship to academic success has been widely celebrated as a powerful story of perseverance, community support, and hope for a brighter future.
