The Chief of Defences (CDF) General Charles Kahariri, visited Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers deployed under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in sector Two a head of planned changes to the mission.
During his visit, Gn. Kahariri met with troops stationed in Dhobely and Kismayu, where he commended their dedication to fostering peace, security, and stability in Somalia.
He praised the soldiers for their professionalism, integrity and discipline emphasizing their crucial role in the success of the mission and in promoting regional stability.
Gen. Kahiriri highlighted the importance of the KDF’s efforts in supporting peace in Somalia and expressed hope for the country’s future.
As the ATMIS mission transitions to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), he urged the troops to remain vigilant and maintain high standards of alertness to counter any threats.
“Maintaining high standards of alertness is key to defeating enemy operations,” Gen. Kahariri stated, signaling the ongoing preparations for the mission’s transition.
This visit is part of Kenya’s efforts to ensure that its forces are well-prepared for the upcoming changes, which will see the African Union’s military engagement in Somalia enter a new phase starting in January 2025.
Officials indicated that Kenya is committed to maintaining a strong military presence to counter the persistent threat posed by al-Shabaab militants.
Gen. Kahariri was accompanied by senior officers, including Deputy Sector 2 Commander Colonel Meshack Kishoyian and Defence Forces Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Class One Bwana Haji Omari.
In related developments, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Nairobi last month for talks with President William Ruto, discussing the future of Somalia’s security in light of the upcoming transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM.
The visit was part of a broader diplomatic shuttle that included stops in Burundi, Djibouti, and Uganda, where President Mohamud sought support for Somalia’s stabilization efforts.
The talks also covered regional issues, including the complex relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia, particularly in light of Ethiopia’s recent agreement with Somaliland regarding access to a naval base.
President Ruto played a key role in mediating the discussion, advocating for the respect of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while highlighting Kenya’s role in promoting peace in the region.
Earlier, Gen. Kahariri also visited Wajir Air Base, where he was briefed on regional security by WAB Base Commander Brigadier Stephen Sane and Deputy Brigade Commander, 8th Brigade, Colonel Gideon Bebora.
He thanked the officers and service members at Wajir for their ongoing efforts to safeguard Kenya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
