Cliff Mike Mwathi Wangui, the driver of the matatu seen dangerously swerving on the Nyeri-Nairobi Highway in Makuyu, has been arrested.
The National Police Service confirmed that Wangui, who was behind the wheel of matatu KBH 889N, will appear in court on Monday to face charges related to the reckless driving incident.
The disturbing footage, which has gone viral, shows two matatus KBH 889N and KCF 996R blatantly flouting traffic rules and regulations.
The video captures the vehicles weaving dangerously across the busy highway, with passengers hanging out of the windows, showing a blatant disregard for their own safety and that of other road users.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) took swift action, arresting the driver, conductor, and owner of the second matatu, KCF 996R.
The trio was arraigned at Kenol Law Courts, where the driver was fined sh 120,000 and had his license revoked for one year.
The owner of the vehicle was fined sh 20,000, while the conductor, who is also the owner’s son, was fined sh 12,000.
The shocking incident was captured by a driver following the matatus, whose voice can be heard in the video expressing disbelief at the dangerous driving.
