The East Africa Student Union (EASU) Kenya has joined the growing call for peace and stability within the East African region, emphasizing the need for diplomatic solutions to conflicts between member states.
Speaking in Nairobi, Anthony Manyara, the Chairman of the East Africa Student Union Kenya, expressed deep concern over the rising tensions between countries in the region.
He urged leaders to prioritize peace over violence, stating that the consequences of war are too costly, not only in terms of lives lost but also in terms of the devastating impact on regional development and the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.
“We are praying that these countries come to a cessation of violence,” Manyara said. “There is no need for war.
The cost of war is too expensive, especially for innocent citizens who bear the brunt of selfish political interests.
The integration of the East African Community has taken significant sacrifice from our forefathers, and we must preserve that legacy.”
Manyara emphasized that the East African Student Union’s mission is to promote peace and diplomacy among member states, with the aim of preventing anarchy and protecting the rights and well-being of civilians, particularly students, who are often the most affected by regional conflicts.
“Our role as the East African Student Union is to encourage our leaders to seek diplomatic solutions and to ensure that tensions are resolved in a mature, peaceful manner,” he said.
“Violence harms education, and when conflict escalates, it becomes impossible for students to continue their studies.
It is crucial that we maintain peace to ensure the progress of education and other vital sectors.”
Manyara revealed that the East African Student Union plans to visit Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to engage with local leaders and raise awareness about the importance of peace in the region.
He reiterated that the EASU’s efforts are aimed at fostering a stable environment where education and development can thrive.
“As students, we understand the importance of peace for progress. We will work to remind our leaders of the need to prioritize peace, as there can be no meaningful development or progress without it,” he concluded.
The East African Student Union’s statement comes at a time when regional tensions have been rising, and calls for peaceful resolutions continue to grow.
Through advocacy and engagement, the Union aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to resolve conflicts and ensure lasting peace within the East African Community.
