Revered Kenyan rapper King Kaka has sparked heated debate online after disclosing the cost of VVIP tickets for his upcoming concert, The Coliseum – Year of The Pen.
The award-winning lyricist has divided opinion among fans, with some applauding the bold pricing while others accuse him of pricing out loyal supporters.
King Kaka is set to stage the second edition of The Coliseum – Year of The Pen concert on Friday, March 27, an event that has been billed as a celebration of lyricism, artistry and Kenyan hip hop culture.
As preparations for the much-anticipated show gather pace, the rapper took to social media to update fans on the progress of the organisation and ticket sales.
In a video sighted by Nairobi News on King Kaka’s social media pages, the rapper expressed gratitude to Kenyans for the overwhelming support he has received so far, particularly for the VVIP tickets, which are retailing at a steep Sh40,000.
Despite the hefty price tag, King Kaka revealed that the VVIP tickets are almost sold out.
According to the artiste, the strong ticket sales prove that Kenyans are willing and able to support their own, regardless of cost.
He boldly stated that the notion that Kenyans are too broke to back local artistes is misguided.
“Tunaweza break barriers, for now VVIP at Sh40k and it’s almost sold out. Tusidharau wakenya, wakenya wako na doh. Ni Sisi tumewadharau. Kenyans from today sitawahi wadharau,” Kaka said.
He further reinforced the message by captioning the video:

While the rapper’s remarks were intended to celebrate the buying power and support of Kenyan fans, they instead ignited a storm of reactions online.

Supporters argued that premium experiences deserve premium pricing and applauded him for refusing to undersell his work.

Quite a number admitted that while they deeply respect and love King Kaka’s music, parting with Sh40,000 for a VVIP ticket is simply unrealistic in the current economic climate.
Others insisted they would have loved to support the rapper but felt the ticket prices were exaggerated and exclusionary.
