Former CID Director Francis Sang Launches Book on Life Beyond the Badge

Former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Dr. Francis K. Sang, CBS, has launched a new book exploring life after public service and the search for purpose beyond a career defined by the uniform.

Titled Retire and Realign; Purpose Beyond the Badge, the 565-page book was launched virtually on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Drawing from his experience as the fourth Kenyan Director of CID, Dr. Sang uses the book to examine the challenges and opportunities that come with leaving active service.

The publication reflects on the transition from a career in law enforcement to a new phase of life, focusing on personal purpose, giving back to society and making meaningful use of skills and experience gained during years of service.

Sang’s message extends beyond police officers, addressing anyone facing a major transition after years of professional commitment.

“The badge may define an officer’s identity, purpose and daily mission, but retirement opens the door to a new chapter,” the book’s theme suggests.

The former CID boss encourages retirees and those approaching retirement to view the transition not as an end, but as an opportunity to reassess their talents, experiences and personal goals.

“Retirement should not mean the end of purpose; it should be an opportunity to realign one’s talents and experience for the next chapter of life,” Sang writes.

The book is also expected to resonate with officers at different stages of their careers, including those joining the service, those currently in active duty and those preparing to leave the profession.

The launch brought together members of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Police Service and other members of the public interested in Sang’s reflections on leadership, service and life after retirement.

Participants were invited to join the virtual event as the former senior investigator shared insights drawn from his decades of experience in public service.

The publication provides a platform for discussing an often-overlooked question among public servants: how to find renewed meaning and purpose once the uniform is no longer part of everyday life.
