Four suspected highway robbers were apprehended today in Vihiga’s Emuhaya sub-county following an attempted theft of a transit truck carrying cement from Machakos to Busia along the Kisumu-Busia route.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. at the Asikote section when the 55-year-old driver of a FAW truck belonging to Mombasa Cement Ltd noticed individuals hanging onto the left side door.
As the door swung open, the thieves began tossing sacks of cement out of the truck.
Despite the driver’s attempts to scare them off by honking repeatedly, the robbery continued, with the assailants dragging the bags into nearby thickets.
Realizing the situation was escalating, the driver stopped the truck, prompting the robbers to approach him.
Fortunately, officers from the Embali Police Station, who were on patrol nearby, heard the frantic honking and rushed to the scene just in time to intervene.
The suspects fled into the bushes, but one of them, identified as Bernard Ochoyi Omari, 33, was captured while carrying one of the stolen 50kg bags.
Police conducted a thorough search of the area and nearby residences, recovering a total of nine bags of cement.
Among the recovered items was a bag found at the home of a suspect named Boaz Amunabi Joshua, alias Spear.
During the search, officers also discovered a blood-stained machete, 21 mosquito nets, and a sack of wheat, along with other suspected stolen goods.
In addition to Omari, three other suspects Francis Khulali, 70, Anthony Etale, 22, and Winnie Odongo Ombati, 28 were arrested during the operation.
They are currently in custody and are set to be processed for arraignment on Friday, November 1.
