Four trailers overturn after cooking oil spill blocks Nairobi–Mai Mahiu Road

Traffic was Friday disrupted along the Nairobi–Mai Mahiu Road after cooking oil spilled across an estimated 10-kilometre stretch of the highway, creating dangerously slippery conditions.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Friday. The cooking oil, believed to have leaked from an unidentified trailer, spread along the escarpment section of the road.

As a result, four trailers lost control and overturned, completely blocking both sides of the highway and bringing traffic to a standstill.

Police officers from Lari Traffic Base are at the scene managing traffic and ensuring the safety of motorists.

Efforts were underway to clean the affected section of the road and tow away the overturned trailers to restore normal traffic flow.

Motorists were advised to avoid the route where possible or expect significant delays as clearance operations continue.

No injuries or fatalities had been reported at the time of the incident.
