Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua is set to make his first official public appearance at the Harambee Stars vs Madagascar quarter-final match at Kasarani Stadium on Friday, just hours after skipping a highly anticipated rally at Kamukunji Grounds.
The DCP announced Gachagua’s planned attendance in a message to supporters following his return to the country on Thursday after a 42-day stay in the United States, where he promoted his “Wantam” agenda in opposition to President William Ruto’s administration.
“DCP Party Leader Hon. Rigathi Gachagua to attend the Harambee Stars vs Madagascar Quarter Finals Match in Kasarani tomorrow,” the announcement read.
The announcement sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans online.
While some welcomed Gachagua’s presence at the national team’s match, others questioned his level of support for Harambee Stars, especially in comparison to President Ruto, who has publicly pledged financial backing for the team.
“Let him give something to the team. We’re not seeing his motivational support like the President does,” one fan commented on social media.
Gachagua’s return was met with fanfare and tension at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where large crowds of supporters gathered to welcome him back.
However, his expected appearance at Kamukunji Grounds for a political rally was abruptly cancelled amid claims of a planned police crackdown.
DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala accused authorities of attempting to arrest Gachagua at the rally venue.
“We wanted to receive our party leader, but they deployed police officers. They planned to apprehend him, but we said no,” Malala stated.
The quarter-final match at Kasarani, scheduled to kick off at 5:00 p.m., is a crucial moment for Kenya’s national football team as they battle Madagascar for a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing continental tournament.
The government has also approved an increase in stadium capacity from 60% to 80%, allowing more fans to cheer on the team in what promises to be a high-stakes encounter.
Gachagua’s attendance is expected to draw further public attention, both for his return to the political stage and for his engagement with national sports at a critical time.
