Former Nairobi County Environment CEC Geoffrey Mosiria has found himself at the centre of an online storm after a Kenyan youth identified as Tony, alias Popcorn, accused him of failing to honour a Valentine’s Day promise, leaving him and his lover stranded and humiliated at a Nairobi hotel.
Tony, who goes by Popcorn on Instagram, on the evening of Saturday, February 14, posted a heartbreaking video of himself with his lover, weeping uncontrollably after they were harassed at a hotel where he had taken his girlfriend for a treat.
According to Tony, Mosiria had promised to treat him to a Valentine’s Day date with his lover but bolted at the eleventh hour.
Nairobi News understands that Tony had earlier taken to social media and posted a photo of himself holding a placard requesting Mosiria to be his Valentine’s Day date.
In a quick rejoinder, the Nairobi county official personally met Tony in Nairobi CBD where he was holding the placard and allegedly promised to cater for his lunch date with his lover.
On Valentine’s Day, the young man received a call from a “No Caller ID” and was instructed to visit a certain hotel in Nairobi where his bills would allegedly be catered for.
Tony concluded it was Mosiria since he was the only one who had promised him the Valentine’s Day treat.
Trusting the arrangement, Tony took his lover to the date, but things went south when hotel management asked him to settle the bill.
With no money on him and fully expecting the bill to be sorted as promised, Tony says he was subjected to harassment by the hotel management who were demanding payment.
Left with no otherwise, Tony took to social media to call out Mosiria for snubbing him and appealed to Kenyans to come to his rescue.
“I received a call from someone who used No Caller ID, and they told me to go to a certain hotel. I did so, since I knew that could be Mosiria as he had promised to cater for my Valentine’s Day date with my girlfriend. I reached here and I have been harrased by the hotel management because of the bill. I decided to go online to plead with Kenyans to rescue me and thanks to Queen Marie J, she paid the bill,” Popcorn said while sobbing.
Thankfully, a Kenyan singer based abroad, Queen Marie J, came across the viral clip and stepped in to clear the bill, getting Tony and his lover out of the awkward situation.
Minutes later, she took to social media to blast Mosiria for failing to honour his promise.
“Justice for boy child @_popcor.n because @geoffrey_mosiria promised to pay for lunch /dinner date but all was in vain 😓😓😓😓😓 had to cater the bills for them after being harassed by the management 😓 @nairobi_gossip_club kindly follow up on this! #queenmj #justiceforboychild,” she wrote on Instagram.
However, Mosiria had, a couple of hours prior to Valentine’s Day, publicly disowned Tony’s claims, maintaining that there was no emergency and that Tony only wanted to meet him so he could assist him in getting a job.
He further accused Tony of using Valentine’s Day theatrics to chase clout, saying he had instead sought to link the young man with educational opportunities.
“Plot twist Valentine ilikuwa tu strategy! He clarified he only wanted a meeting so I could help him get a job. He even confirmed he is not what people call “SIM card 2,” but since Kenyans love controversial content, he chose drama to guarantee attention. Content creator moves! He scored a B- in high school and was looking for a way to join university. I requested ICS Technical College to consider him for a scholarship to pursue a Diploma in ICT, with a pathway to a degree and they agreed to see how best he can be assisted. Lakini jameni, my office is open and accessible to everyone. No need for heart-stopping placards and Valentine proposals-just come straight to the point,” Mosiria posted.
As the debate rages on, Kenyans online remain split, some faulting Mosiria for what they view as a broken promise, others accusing Tony of manufacturing drama.
One thing’s for sure, the Valentine’s Day saga has reignited conversations around public figures’ promises, social media theatrics, and the real-life consequences when expectations go wrong.
