GSF marks International Women’s Day, honors women in security sector in Haiti

The Gang Suppression Force (GSF) marked International Women’s Day by recognizing and celebrating the courage, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women across Haiti.

To commemorate the occasion, various stakeholders including representatives from the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the U.S. Embassy and women drawn from the Haitian National Police (PNH), the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAD’H), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), and the GSF gathered to honor women serving in public institutions and security structures.

The event highlighted the dedication and professionalism of women working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the Haitian people, as part of the broader effort to build a more peaceful and secure nation.

The ceremony was officially opened by Godfrey Otunge, Force Commander of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) and the GSF.

In his remarks, Otunge underscored this year’s theme, “Giving to Gain,” emphasizing that when people help others rise, society rises together.

Other speakers included Sarah Tayyem, GSF Director and Gender Advisor; Garry Jeanniton, representing the INL at the U.S. Embassy; Veronicah Wanjiru of the GSF; and Jhunie Ganeme, spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAD’H).

In their remarks, the speakers acknowledged that women and girls are often among those most affected by violence and insecurity.

They emphasized that protecting the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of women remains a crucial component of ongoing efforts to restore stability and security in Haiti.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with communities, partners, and institutions to ensure women’s voices are heard, their rights respected, and their role in peacebuilding strengthened.

The speakers underscored that a safer Haiti is possible when women and men stand together in unity, dignity, and hope.

The event served as a reminder that International Women’s Day is not only celebrated during times of peace.

In countries facing crisis and instability, the observance becomes even more meaningful—highlighting that women’s dignity, safety, and critical role in rebuilding society must never be overlooked.
