A man in northern Canada reportedly jumped onto a polar bear to protect his wife from being mauled, according to police.
The man, whose identity has not been released, sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover, as confirmed by the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.
The couple had left their home at around 5:00 a.m. local time (11:00 GMT) on Tuesday to search for their dogs when they encountered the bear in their driveway.
The bear lunged at the woman, causing her to fall to the ground.
In an attempt to protect her, the man jumped on the bear, which then attacked him, inflicting serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and legs.
The incident occurred in Fort Severn First Nation, a remote community of about 400 people in northern Ontario.
A nearby neighbor, armed with a gun, arrived and shot the bear several times, causing it to retreat into the woods where it later died from its injuries.
The injured man was taken to a local nursing station for treatment.
Nishnawbe Aski police have been patrolling the area to ensure no other bears are in the vicinity.
Alysa McCall, a scientist at Polar Bear International, explained to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) that polar bear attacks on humans are rare.
When they do occur, the bear is often hungry, young, or unwell.
While polar bears typically stay away from human settlements and hunt seals on sea ice, climate change has disrupted their habitat, driving some inland in search of food.
McCall also dispelled the myth that people should play dead when attacked by a polar bear, advising instead to fight back as long as possible.
