Applying for a driving license in Kenya is a straightforward process that has been streamlined through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to improve efficiency and eliminate long queues. The entire process is now conducted online through the Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) and e-Citizen platforms, allowing applicants to complete their driving license application from anywhere. Here is how to apply for a driving license online.
Eligibility
To apply for a driving license in Kenya, an applicant must first meet the necessary requirements. The applicant must be at least 18 years old for a private vehicle driving license and 21 years old for a commercial driving license. They must also have successfully completed driving lessons from a certified and licensed driving school. In addition, applicants must have passed the NTSA driving test, which assesses their knowledge of traffic laws, road safety, and practical driving skills.
Before beginning the application, the applicant must ensure they have a valid national ID or passport, a certificate of competence from an approved driving school, and a passed test result from NTSA.
Online Application Process
The application process begins with the registration of an account on the NTSA TIMS platform. If the applicant is using the system for the first time, they must create an account by providing their national ID number, phone number, and other personal details. Once the account is set up, the applicant logs in and navigates to the “Driving License” section, where they select the option for a new driving license application.
Applicants must provide their personal information, including full name, date of birth, and contact details. They also need to enter their driving school details and the license category they are applying for, whether for a private vehicle, motorcycle, or commercial vehicle. The system then prompts the applicant to upload scanned copies of their national ID, driving school certificate, and any other necessary documents.
Once all details are filled in, the applicant proceeds to make payment for the driving license. Payment can be made via mobile money services like M-Pesa, debit or credit card, or direct bank transfer. The cost of a one-year driving license is Sh650, while a three-year license costs Sh1,450. For those applying for a smart driving license, the fee is Sh3,050.
Issuance and Collection of Driving License
After completing the online application and payment, NTSA processes the application, and the applicant is notified via SMS or email when the driving license is ready for collection. For those applying for a standard driving license, the temporary document generated from the TIMS portal can be used until the official license is issued.

For applicants opting for the smart driving license, the process includes scheduling an appointment at an NTSA service center for biometric data capture. This involves taking digital fingerprints, a photograph, and a signature. Once the biometric details are recorded, the applicant receives a collection date for the smart card.
The online application process for a driving license in Kenya has simplified access to licensing services while ensuring transparency and efficiency. The digital system eliminates the need for physical paperwork and long queues at NTSA offices, reducing time wastage. Additionally, it enhances security by ensuring that only qualified drivers receive licenses, thus promoting road safety.
