How to see messages on TikTok

TikTok is known for its short, entertaining videos—but it’s also a social platform where users can chat privately through Direct Messages (DMs). Whether you want to view chats from friends, reply to creators, or read notifications, TikTok makes it easy once you know where to look.

This guide explains step-by-step how to see messages on TikTok, why some messages may not appear, and how to fix common issues.

What Are TikTok Messages?

TikTok Direct Messages allow you to:

  • Chat with friends
  • Send videos or profiles privately
  • Receive follow requests
  • Get notifications from creators
  • Share content directly from your feed

But unlike some apps, TikTok limits who can message you, depending on privacy settings and age restrictions.

How to See Message Requests on TikTok

Some messages—especially from people you don’t follow—go into Message Requests.

To see them:

  1. Go to Inbox
  2. Tap Messages
  3. Look for Message Requests at the top
  4. Open it to see chats from people you don’t follow

You can choose to Accept or Delete each request.

Why You May Not See Some Messages

If you can’t see messages, here are the most common reasons:

  1. You’re Under 16

TikTok disables messaging for users below 16 for safety reasons.

  1. The Other Person Doesn’t Follow You

TikTok only allows messages between:

  • Mutual followers, or
  • People who have enabled open messaging in Privacy Settings.

If they don’t follow you back, your message may go to Requests—or not send at all.

  1. Your Privacy Settings Block Messages

Check your settings:

  1. Go to Profile
  2. Tap ☰ (menu)
  3. Select Settings and privacy
  4. Tap Privacy
  5. Choose Direct Messages

Make sure it is set to:

  • Friends or
  • Everyone (if available)
  1. The Sender Deleted the Message

TikTok does not always notify users when a message is removed.

  1. The Person Blocked You

If someone blocks you, their messages and chat disappear.

How to Know If Someone Read Your Message

TikTok does not have read receipts.
You cannot tell if someone opened or read your message.

The only clues are:

  • They reply
  • They like the message

An outdated app may hide the inbox.

Messages won’t load if your connection is poor.

Clears temporary bugs.

This refreshes corrupted app files.
