The High Court in Eldoret is set to sentence Jacktone Odhiambo, a freelance photographer, on Monday for the murder of his alleged lover and LGBTQ rights activist, Edwin Kiprotich Kiptoo, also known as Chiloba.
Eldoret High Court Presiding Judge, Justice Reuben Nyakundi, will determine the prison sentence for Odhiambo after finding him guilty of the high-profile murder.
Last week, Justice Nyakundi convicted Odhiambo for the brutal killing of Chiloba, who was pursuing a degree in Apparel Fashion and Design at the University of Eldoret (UoE).
Chiloba’s decomposing body was discovered on January 3, 2023, stuffed in a metallic box along the Kipkenyo-Kaptinga road in Kapseret sub-county, Uasin Gishu County.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a vehicle drop the box on the roadside before speeding away.
It is believed that Chiloba was murdered at an apartment in Chepkolel, Moiben, where he lived with Odhiambo.
Justice Nyakundi found Odhiambo guilty of intentionally causing Chiloba’s death, fulfilling the legal criteria for murder under Section 203 of the Penal Code.
Five individuals were initially arrested in connection with the murder, including Odhiambo. However, four of the suspects were later released.
Odhiambo was charged with murder but initially pleaded not guilty. He later withdrew his application for bail.
In addition to the sentencing of Odhiambo, Justice Nyakundi will also sentence police constable Lilian Biwott, who is accused of killing her husband at Kimumu Estate in Eldoret.
