JKIA Operations Remain Uninterrupted After Fire Alarm At Terminal 1C

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has assured travellers that flight operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) remain smooth and uninterrupted, despite a fire alarm incident that prompted a precautionary evacuation at Terminal 1C on Saturday afternoon.

According to a statement by KAA, the fire alarm was activated at around 2:55 p.m. local time on July 20 in the check-in area of Terminal 1C.

The airport’s Fire and Rescue team responded swiftly to the alert.

While no fire was detected and there was no immediate threat, the repeated triggering of the alarm led airport officials to deactivate the system temporarily for inspection and evacuate the terminal as a precautionary measure.

“All flights scheduled for Terminal 1C have been seamlessly relocated to Terminal 1A and Terminal 1B,” KAA said.

“There have been no disruptions to flight operations.”

Passengers were advised to confirm their new terminal allocations with their respective airlines.

No injuries or property damage were reported, and investigation teams remain on-site to identify and address the root cause of the alarm.

“Safety remains our top priority,” KAA reiterated, thanking travellers and airport stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the incident.

Recent Fire Incident Near JKIA

The alarm follows another fire-related incident earlier this year. On February 21, a wildfire broke out on grassland near the airport, approaching 75 Airport North Road.

Although videos shared by the public showed flames dangerously close to the runway, KAA confirmed that no critical infrastructure was affected.

The fire was contained through a joint effort by firefighting teams from the Kenya Defence Forces, Nairobi County Fire Department, and KAA’s own Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service.

Long-Term Plans for JKIA and Wilson Airport

In a broader development, KAA recently launched the creation of Integrated Master Plans for JKIA and Wilson Airport to guide long-term infrastructure development and enhance service delivery.

The planning process includes a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA), in compliance with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999.

The assessment, conducted by Dar Al Handasah Consultants and Geodev (K) Ltd., will feature broad stakeholder engagement.

KAA has invited neighboring communities, organizations, and members of the public to participate in upcoming consultation meetings scheduled across six venues, three for each airport.

JKIA is one of Africa’s busiest aviation hubs, handling millions of passengers annually and serving as a critical gateway for international and regional travel.
