Judiciary releases 86 inmates from Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu as part of annual decongestion exercise.

At least 86 inmates have been released from Kodiaga Maximum Security Prison in Kisumu following a prison decongestion exercise in which judges and magistrates reviewed more than 350 case files.

The exercise formed part of the Judiciary’s annual prison decongestion programme, which seeks to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities while enhancing access to justice.

The initiative was led by Kisumu High Court Presiding Judge Alfred Mabeya and Justice Joe Omido.

Judicial officers reviewed eligible cases, with particular focus on minor offences, inmates held on prolonged remand, and matters suitable for non-custodial sentences.

The review resulted in the release of inmates who met the criteria.

The exercise highlights the Judiciary’s commitment to speedy justice and the protection of the rights of persons in custody.

Chief Magistrate and Head of Station Dickson Onyango, alongside High Court Deputy Registrar Getrude Serem, were present to observe the proceedings.

In addition, the team undertook a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by donating assorted items to inmates to help boost morale during the Christmas season, reinforcing a collaborative approach to justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
