Kenya wildlife service responds to public concern over frail lion at Karen’s stedmak gardens

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has addressed growing public concern after images and videos circulated online showing a lion at Stedmak Gardens in Karen appearing malnourished and injured.

The footage, which showed the lion moving slowly and looking frail, sparked widespread outrage and calls for immediate action.

Online reports indicated that visitors who approached the garden’s caretakers with concerns received no explanation regarding the lion’s condition.

“A video was shared of a lion which shares an enclosure (less than 100 m²) with five other lions, and it looked to be injured and very malnourished,” said Kenyan Vigilante on X.

“The caretakers seemed unconcerned and refused to answer questions regarding the lion’s current state,” he added.

In response to the viral content, KWS veterinary team leader Dr. Bernard Rono confirmed that the lion, named Lamu, has been undergoing treatment for progressive spinal nerve degeneration, a condition managed since 2020.

“Lamu continues to receive treatment for progressive spinal nerve degeneration. His therapy includes gentle walks to support his recovery, similar to rehabilitation practices for humans with spinal injuries,” Dr. Rono said.
Despite his condition, Lamu is under constant monitoring, and all other animals at Stedmak Gardens are in good health,” he added.

According to KWS, the 22-year-old lion was rescued from an orphanage in 2012 and has lived well beyond the typical lifespan of wild lions, which averages 12 to 16 years.

KWS emphasized its ongoing commitment to animal welfare, stating:

“Together with our partners, we remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of care, conservation, and protection of Kenya’s wildlife.”

Stedmak Gardens, located in Nairobi’s Karen suburb, is a leisure and hospitality destination offering recreational activities and an animal park.
