A 22-year-old Kenyan has been arrested in Australia in connection with the alleged murder of a fellow Kenyan, even as another tragic incident involving a Kenyan national has left the diaspora community in mourning.
Allan Kiplimo, who resides in Brabham, Perth, was arrested on March 13 by Western Australia Police in coordination with South Australia Major Crime detectives.
Authorities said an extradition warrant was granted by Magistrate Belinda Coleman, paving the way for his transfer to Adelaide on March 14, where he is set to face a murder charge.
According to Australian media reports, Kiplimo is accused of killing Caleb Leriano (24), a Kenyan chef based in Adelaide, following an alleged assault at the victim’s home in Morphett Vale on March 10, 2026.
Police said Leriano was later found unconscious in his crashed BMW 320i at around 1:30 a.m. on March 11.
“The victim sustained life-threatening injuries that were not consistent with the collision, indicating he had been assaulted prior to the crash,” investigators said. Leriano was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives linked Kiplimo to the incident through mobile phone location data, DNA evidence recovered from the vehicle, and CCTV footage allegedly showing him fleeing the scene.
“He was traced through phone location pings, DNA found in the vehicle and CCTV footage, which placed him at the scene before he fled,” police said, adding that the suspect later travelled approximately 1,000 kilometres to Perth.
Meanwhile, the Kenyan community in Australia is also mourning the death of Dennis Kiprono, a young Kenyan who drowned after being swept away by strong ocean tides at Werri Beach near Sydney.
Reports indicate that Kiprono, who hailed from Kipsangui in Uasin Gishu County, had been in Australia for just under six months before the incident on March 15.
He had gone swimming with friends during a weekend outing when powerful currents pulled him away from the shore.
“Despite immediate rescue efforts, he was unable to return to safety,” a source said.
His sudden death has shocked members of the Kenyan diaspora, who described him as a young man with great promise.
“The Kenyan community in Sydney is mourning the tragic death of Dennis Kiprono, who drowned after being swept away by strong ocean tides,” said Kelvin Kibet.
Another mourner, Rhoda Mutisya, added, “This reminds me of Wendy, who also drowned in a swimming pool in Canada. Pole to the family, he had not even enjoyed the country.”
Authorities in Australia continue with investigations into both incidents, as families and the Kenyan community abroad come to terms with the losses.
