The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has handed a two-year suspension to Kenyan marathoner Careen Cheptoek after she admitted to breaching anti-doping regulations.
Cheptoek tested positive for the prohibited substance Methylprednisolone during an in-competition test at the Taipei City Marathon on December 15, 2024.
Methylprednisolone, categorized as a glucocorticoid, is banned in competition when administered by injectable, oral, or rectal routes.
The AIU’s investigation found no evidence of intentional doping, and as this was her first offense, Cheptoek was given a two-year ban starting February 19, 2025.
All results from December 15, 2024, onwards have been disqualified, and Cheptoek forfeits any prizes, medals, or points earned since then.
Initially, Cheptoek claimed the positive test might have been caused by medication she took, but the AIU found no trace of Methylprednisolone in the substances she mentioned.
She later suggested inadvertent ingestion through shared supplements but was unable to provide evidence. The suspension will last until February 19, 2027.
