In a landmark ruling, the Kibera High Court sentenced Amos Wanjala Mutelwa to 30 years in prison for the murder of his 24-year-old ex-wife in 2018.
Prosecuting Counsel Peris Maina successfully demonstrated to the court that Mutelwa had committed the crime.
Judge Diana Mochache, while delivering the verdict, noted that the accused showed no remorse and had consistently denied the crime, instead alleging that the victim had stabbed herself.
The case saw five witnesses, including an eyewitness, testify against Mutelwa.
The eyewitness recounted that Mutelwa confronted the victim after discovering she was planning to marry her new boyfriend.
He demanded the return of gifts he had given her, and when she hesitated, a heated argument ensued.
During the altercation, Mutelwa stabbed her with a kitchen knife and attempted to flee but was apprehended by a crowd drawn to the scene by the victim’s screams.
The prosecution further presented evidence of ongoing tensions between the accused and the victim, which culminated in her tragic death.
The victim’s family described her as a charming, respectful young woman with a promising future, and her death as a devastating loss.
In a separate case, the Kwale Magistrate’s Court sentenced Athuman Hamisi to 20 years in prison for defiling a 13-year-old girl on December 28, 2022, in the Kombani area of Kwale County.
The prosecution, led by Collins Orwa, brought forward six witnesses who testified against Hamisi, providing compelling evidence of his guilt.
Resident Magistrate Ruth Ogolla ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and handed down the sentence accordingly.
