Kisumu market chairlady arrested after viral video shows her assaulting traders

Police in Kisumu Central Sub-county have arrested Kibuye Market chairlady Judith Matengo, widely known as Nyaramba, after a viral video surfaced showing her assaulting two female traders with a wooden rod.

Matengo was apprehended on Monday night while attempting to hide within the market premises, shortly after the footage sparked widespread public outrage on social media and among local residents.

Witnesses said the attack took place in broad daylight, causing panic among traders and customers at the busy market.

The victims, Mercy Okoth and Rozette Adhiambo, have already recorded statements with authorities.

A police report indicates that both women sustained soft-tissue injuries and sought treatment at Lumumba Sub-county Hospital. Other traders at the scene captured the assault on video, which later circulated online.

Investigators are yet to establish a clear motive behind the attack, though some market sources suggest a possible dispute over trading spaces.

In addition to Matengo, police say they are tracking other suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.

Authorities have warned the public against taking the law into their own hands and urged calm as investigations continue.

Matengo is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday at Kisumu Law Courts, facing charges related to assault and public disturbance.

Community leaders have condemned the act, calling for strict enforcement of market regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
