Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), has confirmed Simon Muteti’s release after being absent for more than three months due to an alleged abduction.
Odhiambo disclosed in a statement made on February 11, 2025, that Muteti has been reunited with his family, but his ordeal has left him scarred.
“Simon Muteti was released after being kept incommunicado for over three months.
He is again secure with his family, but his experiences have left a lasting impression on him.
“We will make certain that he and his family receive the necessary legal and psychosocial support,” Odhimbo remarked.
Previously, LSK claimed that Simon was allegedly kidnapped by Special Operations Unit members on October 22, 2024, in Timau, Laikipia County.
The Society further stated that LSK President Faith Odhiambo had provided legal support to Muteti’s anguished family in their pursuit of justice.
“This troubling case highlights the alarming trend of enforced disappearances occurring not only in major urban centers like Nairobi but throughout the country,” according to a statement from LSK.
In response to Muteti’s kidnapping and other similar situations, LSK declared that it will increase its efforts to give legal aid, gather information, support affected families, and promote awareness in partnership with other groups.
Simon Muteti’s complaint was one of numerous reported by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) between June and December 2024.
According to the KNCHR, the abductions primarily targeted government critics and were suspected to include security officials, while authorities denied any involvement.
From June to December 2024, KNCHR reported 82 occurrences of enforced disappearances, including dozens in December in response to widespread AI-generated images of political leaders in coffins.
The victims included social media users, cartoonists, and activists, many of whom were later released in January.
