A major anti-drug operation led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has resulted in the seizure of cannabis valued at over Sh 3 million in Kitale town, just hours before the highly anticipated Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Trans Nzoia County.
The high-risk raid, carried out in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), Administration Police, and local police forces, targeted a suspected drug den on the outskirts of Kitale. Six suspects were arrested during the operation and are currently undergoing interrogation.
Speaking during a community briefing following the raid, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa hailed the seizure as a major victory in the fight against narcotics.
“This is a clear message to those poisoning our society,” Dr. Omerikwa said.
“We will not rest until all traffickers, users, and distributors are brought to book. We are closing in on every hotspot, and no one involved in this trade will escape the long arm of the law.”
Dr. Omerikwa credited the success of the operation to the support of Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration Police) Gilbert Masengeli, who deployed a specialized unit from the National Police Service to execute the sting.
Security sources revealed that the cannabis, meticulously packed in multiple sacks, was discovered in a residential building following several weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
The timing of the raid just before the Jukwaa la Usalama forum underscores the government’s increasing resolve to dismantle drug trafficking networks, particularly in regions grappling with rising drug abuse among youth.
Residents and local leaders attending the forum, which focuses on strengthening community security and safety partnerships, praised the operation and called for sustained efforts to eradicate the drug menace.
Dr. Omerikwa also appealed to the public to play an active role in the anti-drug campaign.
“This fight requires unity,” he emphasized. “Together, we will reclaim our streets from the grip of narcotics.”
As investigations continue and the suspects prepare to face charges, authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing crackdowns.
With momentum building, further operations are expected in the coming weeks across Trans Nzoia and neighboring counties.
