A woman from Murang’a County is currently receiving urgent medical treatment after being severely burned in an attack by a man believed to have been in a relationship with her.
The suspect, identified as Irungu Muturi, allegedly doused Grace Wanja with kerosene and set her on fire during a heated argument.
The shocking incident took place on the morning of Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in Maragua Ridge Village.
After the attack, Muturi fled the scene, and police have since launched a manhunt to apprehend him.
Wanja’s sister, Mary Wangari, recounted the events leading to the attack. She explained that Muturi arrived at their home and asked for food.
“When my sister told him there was no food because we hadn’t cooked the night before, he became angry and threatened to take revenge,” Wangari said.
“He went inside, grabbed kerosene, and poured it on my sister. By the time he came back to me, she was already on fire.”
Wangari said they screamed for help, and neighbors rushed to assist, managing to rescue Wanja and take her to the hospital.
“The neighbors helped us get her to safety, and we quickly took her to the hospital,” she recalled.
Wanja, who sustained severe injuries in the attack, was taken to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital, where doctors reported that 60 percent of her body had been burned.
She was then referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment.
Her sister, Lucy Muthoni, is now appealing for financial assistance to cover the medical expenses at KNH.
“We are asking for help because we cannot afford the treatment at KNH.
She has suffered these serious injuries, and she has four children one is in a children’s home, and the others are still with us,” Muthoni said, her voice filled with concern.
The family is urgently seeking support to ensure Wanja receives the care she needs to recover. Meanwhile, authorities continue their search for Irungu Muturi, who remains at large.
