Police in Rangwe, Homa Bay County, have launched investigations into the death of a 45-year-old man who allegedly sustained serious injuries during a midnight confrontation near Jodongo Bar.
David Choni Abach died at a private hospital in Kisii after being transferred to several health facilities following the alleged assault on September 3, 2026.
According to police, Choni was initially taken to St Teresa Hospital in Mbeka before being referred to Kisii Level 6 Hospital and later to Chirono Private Hospital, where he died before receiving treatment.
His body was subsequently moved to the Agoro Rachuonyo Level 4 Mortuary in Oyugis.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Choni was allegedly found inside a house with a woman at around midnight.
A confrontation reportedly followed, during which Choni was allegedly assaulted with a jembe stick.
Police say the injured man fled from the scene while bleeding.
A man later reported an assault case at Rangwe Police Station at about 2:24am on September 3 and surrendered several items believed to have belonged to the deceased.
The items, which have been preserved as exhibits, include a grey jacket, a black sweater, a Tecno mobile phone and a broken jembe stick bearing suspected blood stains.
On September 5, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Rangwe visited the mortuary as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding Choni’s death.
The officers observed multiple stitches on the deceased’s head and bruises on both elbows.
Detectives also visited and processed the alleged scene of the assault at Mbeka.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the confrontation and the events that preceded Choni’s death.
The items recovered from the scene and the injuries documented during the post-incident examination are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
