Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya and candidate for the Chairperson position of the African Union Commission (AUC), is currently in Mauritius, where he was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam.
During his visit, Odinga expressed his deep gratitude towards the Mauritian government for its unwavering support of his AUC bid.
He thanked the country for its continued solidarity, especially after Mauritius decided to withdraw its own candidacy for the prestigious role last month in favor of supporting Kenya and Odinga’s campaign.
In his remarks, Odinga highlighted the significance of Mauritius’ backing, stating that it was an important endorsement for Kenya’s ambitions on the continental stage.
“Mauritius’ decision to step aside and lend its support to Kenya demonstrates the strength of our ties and the shared vision for Africa’s future,” Odinga said.
Mauritius’ move to withdraw from the race and back Odinga was seen as a significant boost for his campaign, as the African Union Commission Chairperson role is highly coveted and competitive.
The support from Mauritius, along with backing from several other African nations, is expected to play a crucial role in Odinga’s bid to lead the AUC.
The AUC Chairperson position, which oversees the day-to-day operations of the African Union, is a key post for promoting peace, security, and development across the continent.
Odinga’s visit to Mauritius is part of his ongoing diplomatic efforts to garner further support from AU member states ahead of the upcoming election.
