MKU unveils cutting edge robotics, AI and Immersive technologies lab

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has strengthened its position as a regional leader in technology-driven education with the launch of a state-of-the-art Robotics, AI and Immersive Technologies Laboratory, alongside the introduction of the Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot.

The newly unveiled facility is designed to enhance hands-on training and research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and robotics—fields that are increasingly shaping the future of work.

MKU Chairman and founder, Prof. Simon Gicharu, officially unveiled the MKU Robotics, AI, Data Science & Immersive Technologies Lab — a first of its kind in the region.

During the launch, the university also unveiled the Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot, which will enhance robotics and AI training by enabling students to program, train, and test new algorithms on a fully functional platform.

According to the university, the lab will serve as a key hub for students and researchers seeking practical experience with emerging technologies.

In addition to the robotics lab, MKU commissioned upgraded engineering laboratories and unveiled a modern Phantom Head Skills Dental Laboratory, which will provide dental students with advanced simulation training.

The university also expanded its library resources with new scholarly materials aimed at supporting research and academic growth across its programmes.

University officials say these investments underscore MKU’s commitment to applied research, innovation and future-ready training. The expanded technological and academic infrastructure is expected to boost the institution’s capacity to produce industry-ready graduates equipped with skills aligned to global demands.

The launch marks a significant milestone in MKU’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced technology into higher education and strengthen its role as a catalyst for innovation in the region.
