More Fears As Police Shoot And Kill One Person In Clash Over Land At Angama Conservancy

Tension remained high at the larger Angama Conservancy, Narok County after police shot and killed one man in a dispute over land.

At least seven others were injured after police opened fire on a group over an alleged invasion of land in Olkuruk village, Angama Mara, Narok County.

Police confirmed one person had died, but locals said three were killed.

The police managed to disperse and drive away the group of about 300 out of the farm.

More personnel were sent to the area on Friday June 6 to beef up security.

This followed fears the group may return to cause more harm.

The land in question belongs to Narok ex-governor Samuel Tunai and hosts a hotel.

On Friday, local leaders and security chiefs said they had called for a meeting to discuss the matter.

They said they want it solved amicably.

There had been a standoff between police and a group of invaders who stormed the land.

The group went to Angama Conservancy on Wednesday June 4 while armed with assorted weapons, claiming the land belongs to them.

Police said the group of about 300 went to the land with allegations that the conservancy is their land, which was “acquired illegally”.

Efforts to dialogue with them became futile as they turned out to be arrogant and adamant, indicating that they will stay put, police said.

Security teams arrived at the vast land and sought reinforcement from the General Service Unit, Anti Stock Theft Unit, Rapid Deployment Unit and local teams in efforts to drive out the group in vain.

This prompted tension amid fears it could boil out to chaos.

Police said the group went to the farm at about 2 am.

The land in question is about 800 acres and has a popular hotel there.

GSU officers manning the hotel managed to repulse the group by shooting into the air, causing panic among some customers who were therein.

The security teams on the ground pleaded with the group not to disrupt activities on the farm and especially the hotel.

Police said the group is demanding the presence of Tunai in the area to explain how he acquired their land.

There was no immediate comment from Tunai as his mobile phone ran unanswered.

Come Thursday, the situation worsened forcing police to open fire to disperse them. It was then one person was killed, police said.

The group dispersed and promised to be back.

Police on the ground believe the group was incited by some local leaders to stage the invasion.

The area has been a point of interest since six people were shot and killed in a clash with police over land in Angata Barrikoi.

Hundreds of acres of sugarcane in the area were burned down in the chaos in May 2025.
