Murang’a Man Convicted Of Manslaughter For Running Over Wife in 2021

A man from Murang’a County has been found guilty of manslaughter after running over his wife with a vehicle in 2021.

The Kandara Law Court convicted the suspect despite his claim that unknown individuals had taken control of his car and caused the fatal accident.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the incident occurred on May 31, 2021, in the Mwana-wikio area of Gatanga, Murang’a County.

The suspect, who was driving a Toyota Probox, had called his wife moments earlier, instructing her to open the gate for him.

However, instead of a normal arrival, he drove through the gate with his vehicle, crashing into his wife and the gate. The woman died instantly at the scene.

In court, the man claimed that as he approached the gate, unknown men seized control of his car and ran over his wife before disappearing into the darkness.

However, the prosecution, led by Hilda Jebet and Millicent Oduor, argued that there was no evidence supporting the presence of any third party at the scene.

The court found the man’s defence unconvincing, resulting in his conviction. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 23.

This case adds to a growing number of tragic incidents in Kenya involving spouses who have lured partners to their deaths.

In March, a former United Nations employee was convicted of murdering his wife during a birthday trip to Naivasha in Nakuru County in 2017.

The wife was found dead in the bathtub of the lodge room, and the prosecution presented testimony from 17 witnesses, proving the murder was premeditated.

As investigations and convictions continue, authorities urge vigilance regarding domestic violence and calculated spousal crimes, stressing the importance of justice for victims and their families.
